Most Shopify stores run an announcement bar. Most announcement bars get ignored. The difference between a bar that drives clicks and one that blends into the background isn't the design — it's the copy.
Merchants spend time getting the right color and font but write the message in 30 seconds. That's backwards. Your announcement bar sits at the top of every page on your store. Every visitor sees it. The words you put there determine whether they take action or scroll past. This guide covers what to say in your Shopify announcement bar, what not to say, and specific message formats that work for common merchant goals: free shipping thresholds, limited-time offers, sales, and new arrivals.
An announcement bar is prime real estate — it's the first thing a visitor reads before they've seen your hero image or your products. If the message doesn't communicate value in under five words, most shoppers won't register it. They're not ignoring your bar because it's the wrong shade of blue. They're ignoring it because the message doesn't give them a reason to care.
A well-written announcement bar message does two things: it creates immediate clarity ("what am I being offered?") and a reason to act ("why now?"). Most bars fail at both.
Before writing any copy, decide what the bar is supposed to accomplish:
Each goal requires different copy. Don't try to communicate more than one thing in a single bar. If you have multiple messages, rotate them — Boolean Conversion Kit's announcement bar lets you cycle through messages automatically.
Formula: [Action verb] + [threshold] + [benefit]
Examples:
The last example is dynamic — it changes based on cart value — and performs better than static messages. Boolean Conversion Kit's free shipping bar does this automatically, showing each shopper exactly how close they are to the threshold.
Formula: [Offer] + [deadline] + [CTA]
Examples:
Avoid: "Big summer savings event happening now!" — this is too vague. There's no concrete offer, no deadline, and no action. Shoppers skip right past it.
Formula: [New/Back] + [product name] + [CTA]
Examples:
Formula: [Proof point] + [peace-of-mind statement]
Examples:
Trust messages work especially well for new visitors who don't know your brand yet. If your store gets a lot of first-time traffic from ads or search, rotate a trust message in alongside your offer messages.
Vague claims. "Huge discounts available!" tells shoppers nothing. Be specific about the offer, the threshold, or the deadline.
All caps and excessive punctuation. "FREE SHIPPING TODAY ONLY!!!" looks like a popup ad. It signals noise, not value.
Long sentences. Five words is the sweet spot. Ten is the max. Anything longer and the bar loses its impact — shoppers read the first three words and move on.
Stale copy. An announcement bar that says "Summer Sale" in October is worse than no bar at all. It signals you're not paying attention to your store, which erodes trust. Set a calendar reminder every 2–4 weeks to review and update the message.
When you have nothing specific to promote, run a trust message rather than leaving a stale offer up. "Free returns on all orders" or "Ships in 1–2 business days" is always relevant and always reassuring to shoppers who are on the fence.
If you're running a promotion, update the announcement bar the day the promotion starts. Don't set it up a week early and don't leave it running a week after the sale ends.
The easiest system: tie your announcement bar updates to your email calendar. Whenever you send a promotional email, update the bar to match. When the email campaign ends, swap back to a default trust message.
Boolean Conversion Kit includes an announcement bar that lets you set custom messages, colors, and links. You can enable message rotation to cycle through multiple offers, set display rules, and match the bar's style to your theme — all without touching any code. It takes about five minutes to set up and runs site-wide automatically.
Install it free on the Shopify App Store and start with one message. Get the copy right before you start rotating.
